What Are The Causes of Antimicrobial Resistance?
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) develops when germs mutate and become significantly harder to treat.
The biggest cause of AMR is due to both the overuse and misuse of antibiotics. Not finishing prescribed medicines allows germs to survive and become resistant.
Antibiotics are also commonly used in animals and in agriculture, which only adds to the problem and especially the issue of AMR spreading into the environment.
Poor infection control standards in hospitals and communities also contribute to resistant germs spreading, alongside other factors such as limited access to clean water and global travel.
All of these factors together are causing AMR to increase and spread worldwide at an alarming rate.
